Paul Merklein enjoys taking his show on the road. Performing for audiences of all ages, he combines dynamic art and audience participation in his creation of Great Big Faces.
"I call it art in action for everyone," says Merklein, adding that he typically performs for the people in the back row. "If I can hold their attention, I'm happy."

On February 17, Deerfield students watched a unique performance by Paul Merklein drawing Great Big Faces. Merklein is a self-taught artist who draws surprise characters, students and teachers.
"My show is about creativity, variety and diversity," says Merklein. "Maybe I'm demonstrating that everyone sees you differently. Or maybe I just want to get in your face."

Paul Merklein draws Great Big Faces at schools, libraries, festivals and special events. He visited Wild Rose School for two shows, teaching students about art, perception and imagination.
“It’s a variety show where I throw a lot of ideas at them," said Merklein. “Not only is this my job, it’s what I love to do."

Between his Friday lunch session in SCSU Atwood Memorial Center and his appearance at Atwood After Dark Friday night, artist Paul Merklein drew more than 100 Great Big Faces.
Merklein talked and joked with students while he drew them, and said talking to people helps them forget they are being drawn and prevents fake smiles. His jokes ranged from "eyebrows that need their own zip code" to "freckles are such a hard sell."
